Data Center: protect cooling and power continuity

IT load never stops, so the mechanical and electrical plant behind it cannot either. edgeSV monitors the chillers, pumps, CRAH fans and transformers that keep servers cool and powered, with power quality data from the same measurement.

The situation

Data centers are designed with redundancy, but redundancy only helps if the standby unit is healthy and the failing unit is found early. Cooling is the largest non-IT load, and rising rack densities leave less thermal margin. Non-linear IT loads also add harmonic stress to transformers.

Value for your operation

Health scores for duty and standby alike

Redundancy only helps if the standby unit is healthy. edgeSV evaluates duty and standby equipment so a silent failure is found before a failover needs it.

Protect redundancy while you maintain

Early warnings allow a worn unit to be repaired while its partner carries the load, keeping N+1 intact instead of working under emergency conditions.

Equipment health and power quality together

The same measurement provides equipment diagnostics and power quality records, such as harmonics, sag and swell, for SLA and audit evidence.

Challenges

  • Redundant units that fail silently
  • Shrinking thermal margin at high rack density
  • Harmonic heating in transformers
  • Strict SLA and audit requirements

How edgeSV helps

  • Health scores for duty and standby units alike
  • Transformer stress indicators including K-factor and FHL
  • Event records for sag, swell and transients
  • Integration with DCIM and BMS over Modbus

Outcomes

  • Protected cooling and power redundancy
  • Evidence for SLA and uptime reporting
  • Planned replacements instead of emergency work

Equipment and use cases

Chillers

Chiller motor and compressor condition is monitored since cooling is the largest non-IT load.

Chilled and condenser water pumps

Bearing wear and flow-related load changes are detected, including on standby pumps during test runs.

Cooling towers

Fan motors and VFDs are watched to keep heat rejection capacity available.

CRAH and CRAC fans

Fan motor condition is followed in the white space where thermal margin is thin.

Main transformers

Transformer stress, loading and harmonic heating are tracked to protect the power path.

UPS input and output feeders

Power quality at UPS feeders is recorded, including sag, swell and transients.

PDU and busway feeders

Loading and quality on distribution feeders are monitored down to the rack row.

Harmonics and K-factor

Harmonics up to the 63rd order and K-factor show the stress that non-linear IT loads put on transformers.

Standby equipment readiness

Standby units are evaluated whenever they run, so their condition is known before a failover.

Example scenario

  1. A standby chilled-water pump shows bearing defect frequencies during its weekly test run.
  2. edgeSV raises a caution before the pump is ever needed in a failover.
  3. The bearing is replaced while the duty pump carries the load, keeping N+1 intact.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from DCIM or BMS monitoring?

DCIM and BMS tools track status, temperature and capacity. edgeSV adds diagnosis of the electrical equipment condition itself and shares results with them over Modbus.

Can standby equipment be assessed?

Yes, whenever a standby unit is running, for example during its periodic test run, its electrical behavior can be evaluated.

Is it safe to install in a live facility?

Installation connects to existing measurement points in the switchgear. The procedure should be planned with the facility team under the site's own change management rules.

Does it measure power quality too?

Yes. Harmonics, sag, swell, transients and K-factor are provided from the same device.

Can it integrate with our existing systems?

Yes. Data can be passed to DCIM, BMS and SCADA over Modbus TCP or RTU.

Can it support SLA and audit reporting?

Event records and condition history give evidence for uptime reports, although the reporting format itself is defined by your own process.
